Friday afternoon fun

posted by admin in Uncategorized

Hands up if you actually do any work when it gets to 3pm on a Friday afternoon? My hands stayed firmly by my side, apart from that one hellish week when I had the report on school management jobs to complete and I was stuck in the office until nearly 7pm. I almost missed out on my post-works drinks thanks to that little beauty! In a normal week, however, the last hour and a half at my desk is spent doing as little actual work as possible; making plans for the weekend, rearranging all my office stationery, staring out of the window and checking out all the weird and wonderful links that I’ve been sent by friends and family throughout the week. After all, the boss leaves early on a Friday to get home so there’s no-one looking over your shoulder if you decide it’s more important to watch the new “Weebl and Bob” episode than it is to do some actual work.

Weebl and Bob is something I discovered during my first proper job after university. Now, this was a few years ago so internet animation was definitely in its infancy. And ever since then the creator of Weebl and Bob has refused to enhance his product, still keeping the same simple line-drawn characters and basic colour schemes, relying on humour to entertain his thousands, if not millions, of fans.

The brains behind the cartoon, who goes by the name Weebl himself, also creates corporate animations and Flash games for other websites, all of which appear on his site along his “just for fun” cartoons. I may be revealing myself as a bit of a nerd here when I admit to having actually bought t-shirts, hoodies and stuffed toys of my favourite characters from the Weebl store. Much more entertaining than recruitment reports!

Genealogy and Free Books

June Brown was amazing on Who Do You Think You Are . She began her journey in the East End of London, went to Amsterdam, Madrid, and then Algeria (actually she didn’t go to Algeria, but got help researching it from a genealogist in Spain). If you saw it, you may have been inspired to begin you own search to understand you own roots. Without the bank roll of the BBC, it can seem daunting, but there are a plethora of free online resources that can help you get to grips with your own personal and family history.

The first step, is of course, understanding where your biological parents come from. If this is in doubt at all, you should opt for legal paternity testing. This is often an issue for people who feel that they don’t have any physical resemblance to the father who raised them. It can be a can of worms, but you can get advice and emotional support form a number of online discussion forums such as livestrong or adoption dot com. Many people find strong connections and emotional support from others who have experienced the same thing even though they are unlikely ever to meet. Your next step is to get some books are genealogy and watch some informational videos. You tube is great for free videos and this can point you in the right direction.

If you are trying to get your hands on some good second hand books, there is an amazing website called book mooch. Book mooch is a community of people who swap books online. Basically what you do is register as a member for free and then post the books that you have available to swap. Every time somebody asks for one of your books you earn points in the system, and every time you ask for a book you get points deducted. It helps keep things even, so you pay at your end for the cost of shipping the book, but you don’t have to pay when a book is shipped to you. There are forums as well, so you can get stuck into the community and get books that might not necessarily be listed. If you are planning a find your roots trip, you should head over to the Lonely Planet website. Again, it is a strong community with committed members there to give you the best local tips available.

Online Networking – A Wonderful Phenomenon

Online Networking – A Wonderful Phenomenon

Social networking is the best thing that has happened to the internet. All you have to do is get hold of accounts that have relaxed privacy settings and you can learn a lot about individuals who are complete strangers. I have discovered that one can learn quite a lot by checking out profiles and accounts of individuals who have made bulk of their private information public.

I found many links that led me to numerous opportunities for teaching English jobs More

Every so often, but not too often, I come across a web-site so simple, brilliant and genius in its application that I want to run around all my friends houses and shout at them to play it too. This is unusual for two reasons: 1) I hate running and 2) my friends live miles away, so it’d need to be something pretty amazing for me to run absolutely ages to tell them.

In this case, the ever-so-amazing thing is a More

The "Green Trend" - Is It a Trend or a Life Transformation?

Because of ecological worries and also the energy crisis in the past several years, it would appear that “going green"is definitely a buzz right now (much like solitaire ); through current companies being “green certified"and many more mushrooming into environmentally friendly organizations, the actual philosophy in going green appears to be acquiring the interest. Within current blog posts which I read through there appears to be the general opinion for the perception in which I have experienced some time back More

Doing It Doggy-Style

Love ’em or hate ’em, dogs can be hilarious; they’ve always got something to offer, and the only negative thing is that you get bitten every now and again, and if they’re feeling naughty they might unleash a brown disaster on your light beige carpet. But still, they’re just what you need when you get home from a day of calling DNA Testing labs.

Check out the following link and see for yourself how funny they can be: http://www.funnydogsite.com/videos/dog-singing-with-bird.htm

Nostalgia

There’s something about the work of Alexander Millar that reminds me of the work of illustrator Raymond Briggs, who provided us with such classics as When the Wind Blows, Father Christmas, and of course, The Snowman. For me, it conjures up a sense of nostalgia, with the image of the small child and the adult figure reminding me very much of the little boy in The Snowman, which in turn reminds me of my own childhood. When we see, More
